Abstract

The Institut fur Erdmessung (IfE), University of Hannover, operating as the Computing Center of the IAG Subcommission for the Geoid in Europe, has presented the European Gravimetric (Quasi) Geoid EGG97. This is a high-resolution (1.0'x1,5' grid) quasigeoid model for the continent, with a relative accuracy of ±1...5...20 cm/10...several 100...several 1000 km, in areas with good data coverage and quality. Consequently this solution can be used for transforming GPS heights to normal heights. After a review of previous geoid and quasigeoid calculations for the area of Germany, the strategy for the computation of a 'cm'-geoid is explained, and the EGG97 model is described shortly. Several comparisons with GPS/levelling control points in Germany indicate that a fit of EGG97 to these control points delivers a 'one cm' accuracy over some 100 km, already with simple fitting procedures. A further improvement is possible through more rigorous combination solutions, as soon a homogeneous set of GPS/levelling control points is available.
