Abstract

Relining methods are increasingly used for the rehabilitation of deteriorated pipes. Design recommendations are given in ATV-M 127 part 2 [2]. However, from large scale tests on severely deteriorated concrete pipes provided with liners it appears that with the recommended design approach the load capacity of such pipes can be considerably underestimated. The main reason for this is the underestimation of soil stiffness. In the paper presented here different approaches for the consideration of soil stiffness with structural pipe design are discussed. It is shown that for subsequently deteriorated pipes, i. e. after burying, the usual approach for newly buried pipes with stress-independent soil stiffness modulus is not suitable. A calculation model with load-dependent bedding stiffness is presented, which yields good agreement of the calculated deformation behaviour with the behaviour observed in large-scale tests.
