Abstract
The ability to adapt production operations to market conditions and orientate them to future requirements is becoming an increasingly important factor for business enterprises. In this context a sound knowledge of the strong points and weaknesses in a company's production operations constitutes the prerequisite for identifying sources of potential for improvement. This article acquaints the reader with a concept that, on the basis of a database with production data and evaluations of over 100 companies, enables an objective procedure for knowledge-based assessment of the performance of companies with batch-size production operations. Previously undiscovered production output potential is brought to light from the currently existing situation and measures for improving operational efficiency can be derived. Previously undocumented expert knowledge is recorded on a structured basis and used for evaluating production operations.
