Abstract
High quality requirements on Crankshafts are demanded to ensure the accurate function during the application. The quality of the part is significantly influenced in the hard finishing, in particular during the grinding operation. The decreasing tolerances of the part differ from the complex, asymmetric geometry of the crankshaft. This geometry leads to unsteady process behavior due to the angle-dependent stiffness of the part. Besides the securing of the quality, an economic grinding process is a pre-condition for a competitive production. The trade between the objectives of achieving a high-quality product and an economic manufacturing is solved by an aligned chaining of sequential process levels with decreasing material removal rate. Moreover, further processing time reduction can be achieved by an active feed-forward process control. The economic potential of both approaches is displayed for the contour-controlled wheel-head-oscillating grinding process with 4-cylinder crankshafts.
