Abstract

The impression of an attractive concrete surface is dominated by a sensitive system of fresh concrete, separating agent and formwork material. Furthermore it depends on factors including e.g. the casting technique, workmanship and weather conditions. The following discussions are based on surfaces with a smooth and homogeneous appearance. However, sometimes unrequested phenomena occur like clouding, marblings, pore formation and discolorations. In order to minimize these phenomena, it is necessary to develop special concrete compositions for attractive concrete. During a systematic research important influences of the concrete composition on the characteristics exposed concrete have been found and approaches for an exposed concrete technology which is insensitive relating to imperfections of the formwork were formulated. The freshly mixed concrete characteristics of these compositions like viscosity and workability have been changed compared to conventional concrete compositions. The joint research activities are going on concentrating on practical executions. The different behavior during placing and compacting of this new attractive concrete has to be communicated and the execution on site has to be practised e.g. with the aid of some specially developed testing formworks. The report will address both laboratory tests and practical experience on site.
