A new echo technique to access the coherent and dissipative dynamics of atomic wave packet oscillations in trapping potentials was experimentally and systematically validated. By using this technique, the coherence time of wave packet oscillations in strongly confining dipole potentials was measured in a regime that was previously inaccessible.
