Abstract
Transformer insulations based on silicone or ester fluids in combination with aramid paper allow much higher operating temperatures than conventional mineral oil and cellulose insulation systems. Due to the higher operating temperature, it is possible to construct compact medium voltage transformers that are widely used in wind power plants. However, in recent years, there has been a number of transformer related outages where a wax-like substance was found on the high voltage coil. Thus, different factors influencing the formation of solid ageing products were examined, as well as their effects on the electric and dielectric properties of the insulation fluid. By performing a dissolved gas analysis (DGA), indicators were determined that allow the detection of faults at an early stage.
