Abstract

Environmental history research is interdisciplinary. But regrettably, it is still not as interdisciplinary as it could be. Historical, geographical and ecological institutes are dealing with this object. Objectives and methods are defined by the different disciplines, respectively. In France, traditionally written sources and historical implements are most important for environmental history, in Germany and Northern Europe geographical sources and maps. In England and Ireland, some very good overviews of environmental history have been written, which deal with both history and geography or ecology. To promote interdisciplinary collaboration it is important to deal together on the basis of exactly the same objects in the landscape instead of applying only disciplinary methods and interpretations. For this purpose it is necessary that scientists know their specific methods and the limitations of them, but collaborate on the same level. An interdisciplinary landscape science including different aspects of the humanities can be an aim for future collaboration.
