Abstract
This paper provides an overview on the MPEG-4 standard in general with a special emphasis on the implementation of the video coding part. Properties of the most popular visual profiles, their application fields, and characteristic implementation examples are discussed The review of current state-of-the-art and future developments in MPEG-4 circuit design known from literature includes dedicated hardware as well as programmable architectures, such as embedded RISC-based (software) solutions, DSPs, and media processors.
