Abstract

An elaborative, intransparent cost calculation causes high effort of bid generation and a high risk of miscalculation for companies of the mould making industry. Especially the early design- and productions-specific dimensioning of the contour element of high pressure die casting moulds is important in order to calculate production costs according to the involved input. The experience-based dimensioning uses assumptions for calculation that potentially change during design process of the mould. Bids calculated this way are likely to be imprecise. In order to improve the accuracy of the cost calculation, the Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools (IFW) develops a new approach by generating a virtual prototype of the contour element and passing cost-relevant geometrical information in a rule-based calculation system called Visual Form Calculator (VFC). This makes an effortless and transparent costing of material and production costs possible and supports the bid generating process of manufacturers of high pressure die casting moulds.
