Abstract
From the shadow of a workpiece recorded by a CCD-sensor, its geometric profile can be determined. This profile mar be determined to a few microns using the Fresnel-diffraction-fringes at the shadow border, when the workpiece is illuminated with parallel monochromatic radiation. This measurement principle is used by a measurement system to measure workpieces produced by a lathe. The set-up, the image analysis and the calibration of this system are presented. Finally, using the measurement results of diameter and length, the advantages, specific problems, open questions and further applications of this optical measurement method are discussed.
