Abstract

A field experiment on solute transport through a sandy soil (Gleyic Podzol) was conducted in winter 1989/90 at a flat arable site in north Germany. A bromide tracer was applied to the soil surface (bare after winter wheat) and leached downward only by natural rainfall. Bromidetracer and natural nitrate concentrations of the soil solution were measured in 120 cm depth by means of 51 suction probes, which were vertically installed with a 0.2 m horizontal spacing. Bromide and nitrate concentrations during the break through in 120 cm depth were found to be highly variable. Nevertheless, stochastic data analyses (variograms, power spectra, cross spectra) revealed quite similar spatial variability structures of these solute concentrations comprising a periodic variation with frequency f = 0.333 m-1. From these findings it is concluded that in case of the presented field experiment also spatial variability of the nitrate concentrations is mainly caused by intrinsic factors during solute transport through the soil.
