Abstract

A space qualified laser system based on monolithic non-planar Nd:YAG ring oscillator (NPRO) is developed. The system can be used for space applications such as a satellite based light induced detection and ranging (LIDAR), gravitational wave detectors or coherent inter satellite communications. The arrangement of the laser is such that the pump light from laser diodes is collimated and focused with two lenses into the laser crystal. The monolithic Nd:YAG ring has excellent frequency and power stability, low amplitude noise and high efficiency. The conceptual design of the laser system and experimental results concerning space qualifications are numerically investigated.
