Abstract

The development of Corynephorus canescens dominated grasslands on sandy soils ("Sandgrasheide") has been observed after different measures (transfer of sods, hay, diaspore bank, and sampled seed) on permanent plots in the city of Nuremberg since 1991. The transfer of sods and diaspore banks have proven to be the most effective methods to establish the endangered grassland community at a new site. Beginning grass dominance with ongoing loss of heliophilic species can be controlled by mowing. Sites with hay application develop similar but far slower. The results allow the conclusion that grassland communities on sandy soils can be successfully established within two to four years.
