Abstract

Smart service systems are understood as assembly of smart products and digital services that represent holistic solutions which are not limited to fulfill a predefined set of customer needs but to adapt to changing requirements over time. Therefore, the system recognizes operating states automatically, learns them if necessary and carries out its reconfiguration autonomously. Existing conceptualizations target at relating service consumer and service provider by operational resources where smart products, which embed communication and information processing technologies, usually take the role of the boundary object. Since a single smart product or a network of smart products must have the ability to adapt itself to the current use case, it has to be understood as instantiation of a solution space that encompasses all valid hard- and software configurations. If a reconfiguration is triggered, the smart product checks for consistency with the solution space. Only if it is approved the reconfiguration is implemented, either by reparametrization of software/control units or by the exchange of physical components. Such interrelationships are already being discussed in the field of knowledge-based product configuration in general as well as in solution space development of mass customization offerings in particular. This article aims at bridging both concepts and integrate solution space modelling and product configuration into the concept of smart service systems.
