Abstract
The presented examinations clarify that not all of the process parameters have an influence on the surface quality. Only the cutting speed, the tool corner radius and the amplification factor show a major effect. To store and read out information not only roughness and waviness have to be taken into account, but also the burr formation on the structure's ridge. This burr formation can be influenced by the corner radius of the tool tip as shown. If these burrs occur, the optical read-out of the stored data will be affected negatively. To increase the amount of stored data low cutting speeds, low feeds and small corner radii are necessary. But due to the presented technological limitations it is not possible to increase the data density infinitely. It is especially restricted by the cutting speed and the feed. For these parameters, certain limit values have to be observed in order to guarantee favorable chip formation without damaging of the component surface. By using he default values for process parameters a data density of about 4 kBit/cm2 can be achieved. Further investigations will deal with the transfer of the process to generate information carrying microstructures onto planar surfaces. This will be achieved by using a spindle with a piezoelectrically actuated infeed axis in a milling operation.
