N2 - A range of different societal values need to be considered when evaluating ecosystem services and their changes in relation to both landscape planning and assessing specific planning proposals. These are typically expressed through legislative or preference-based frameworks, the latter involving economic or social methodologies. This chapter describes the various types of societal values and the core principles of the different legislative and preference-based frameworks, their strengths and weaknesses, and how they can be combined in the assessment of proposals.
