Abstract

Compared to other deterioration mechanism, such as chloride ingress and carbonation, the development of performance-based design approaches for acid attack on concrete has not progressed so far. Among others, this can be reasoned with the missing of a widely accepted test method for the evaluation of acid resistance. Therefore, currently existing test methods are considered and necessary testing principles for achieving reliable, reproducible and accurate test results are highlighted. On that basis, an approach for the generalisation of test methods is presented, the first step towards a performance-based design approach. Another essential step is the specification of an appropriate performance limit which has to be met. Considering acid attack on concrete structures, it must be kept in mind that degradation proceeds immediately without an initiation period. Thus, reduced structural dimensions have to be assumed at the end of service life. Consequently, the consideration of material resistance alone is not sufficient and the specification of a performance limit has to be in conjunction with required structural dimensions. Based on these fundamentals, conceptual considerations for a performance-based design approach are presented.
