Abstract
This article focuses on the diplomatic negotiations of the European pentarchy, referring to the entangled revolutions of Spain and Spanish America, the recognition of the Independence of the emergent Spanish American nation states, and the abolition of slave trade from the Congress of Vienna, 1814-15 to the Congress of Verona, 1822. With this last, the system of Congresses was given up because of insuperable differences between England and the conservative powers of the Holy Alliance with respect to the "Spanish question" (the intervention against the liberal Triennium 1820-1823) and the "Spanish American question" (the mentioned recognition of the new states). This article also discusses the difficult position of Prussia, between the necessities of its economy, which needed Spanish American, especially Mexican, markets and therefore negotiations with the new Republics on trade relations, and the legitimist position of the Prussian Court, as well as the political pressure from the courts and governments in Vienna and St. Petersburg against the recognition of the Hispanic American Independence.
