Abstract
During the late 1960s and 1970s the term Widerstand became more and more important in political debates in Germany. In the historiography about the Third Reich a broad definition of various kinds of Widerstand against Hitler competed with a narrow interpretation that associated it with the aim to destroy Nazism. There are several periods and types of resistance in Nazi Germany: communist resistance, socialist resistance, dissent and nonconformity on the basis of religious convictions, military opposition, Jewish resistance, youth resistance, resistance behind barbed wire. The numerous types of resistance, nonconformity, and dissent stress the need for a broad definition of Widerstand that also allows for terminological diversification. Above all, we have to recognize that, after 1933, accommodation and collaboration were the normal patterns of public behaviour, while 'resistance' aiming to overthrow the Nazi regime was pursued only by a minority.
