Abstract
Various companies implement lean production systems to realize hidden technological and economical potentials. However, especially small and medium sized companies often do not have the means to implement their own, individualized production system. The article highlights the benefit of knowledge-based systems for formalizing production system knowledge. It presents a production system ontology as well as an lean expert system. Future research work will address further production system concepts such as work stations in order to improve production system ontology quality.
