Abstract

This paper deals with the spatial estimation of short-time increment precipitation for the purposes of flood analysis and modelling using data of the heavy precipitation period from 10 to 13 August 2002 that led to the extreme flood event in the eastern Ore Mountains and in the River Elbe. Daily and hourly precipitation data are interpolated with conventional and geostatistical methods, and the results are compared. The paper focuses on the spatial estimation of hourly precipitation from limited point observations, harnessing additional information on the topography of the region, on precipitation patterns from the denser daily station network and from weather-radar data. Cross validation shows that in the case of daily precipitation all interpolation methods yield data of similar quality, while the geostatisticall methods produce less errors in hourly precipitation estimation. Improvements become particularly obvious when additional information from the daily station network and from weather radar are included in the spatial estimation of hourly precipitation.
