Abstract

Milling processes, especially roughing operations, are often limited by unwanted vibrations. A widely used measure to suppress these vibrations are chamfers on the flank face of the cutting tool. However, process-inherent flank wear can cause the same stabilizing effect as a chamfer. The stabilizing effect of flank wear was investi-gated in a research project at the Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools at the Leibniz Universität Hannover (IFW) and has led to productivity increases in milling processes of aluminium Al7075 and AISI4140+QT.
