Abstract
The importance of business process management is increasing due to growing competition among European higher education institutions and due to a move towards service orientation. In a qualitative content analysis based on interviews with 37 experts from 16 German higher education institutions, the deployment, use, and impact of business process management approaches in the context of process-oriented implementation of integrated process-oriented information systems are investigated. Based on the business process management life cycle, the collected data is interpreted and discussed. It is shown that the implementation of a process-oriented information system leads to the establishment of process management in the domain of higher education. Furthermore, it is clear that not all potential benefits can be realized at the moment. The long-term establishment of sustainable business process management that takes organizational development measures into account was observed in only a few cases.
