Abstract
was central to the early modern reception of ancient sources, the role of the wife in the household has been misunderstood and marginalised in older scholarship. Based on a close reading of ancient sources, this chapter critically examines the alleged dominance of the ‘Hausvater’ and reflects on the vital role of the wife as household manager (οἰκονόμος ἀγαθή/oikonomos agathē) in ancient Greek οἶκοι/oikoi.
