Abstract

The optical spectra of Nd-like W, Re, Os, Ir, and Pt ions were studied in charge states close to the predicted 5s-4f level crossing. After identifying the lines, we infer possible values for optical transitions in Ir17+ with very high sensitivity to a variation of the fine-structure constant α.
