Abstract
Palynological investigations in two plaggen soils in the northern area of Osnabruck indicate the start of the medieval cultivation of winter cereals in northwestern Germany. In conformity to the immediate surroundings of the two profiles different materials constituting the plaggen soil can be discerned. The plaggen soil from Malgarten is situated in the plain of the Hase river, where sods from wet meadoews and pastures were available. In opposition to Malgarten the plaggen soil from Weese is placed between sand plains and bogs. Accordingly, dry heathlands which developed from grazed birch-oak woodlands (Betulo-Quercetum) were primarily used for plaggen material. The pollen spectra indicate, that peat sods had been used additionally in Weese. -English summary
