Abstract
The consideration of an holistic design approach, taking into account not only the load bearing capacity and economical effects but also sustainability effects as e.g. ecological aspects, will have an increasing impact to the construction choice in future. Based on already known sustainability assessment methods originating from the building sector a sustainability assessment applicable for steel structures of renewables was developed within the research project NaStafEE. Criteria for the sustainability categories ecology, economy, social responsibility, engineering and process were generated to enable the assessment of the sustainability of steel constructions of offshore wind energy turbines. The assessment method as well as sustainability results for two offshore structures we presented within this paper.
