Abstract

This work reports detailed investigations on the "one-pot" approach to the synthesis of organically functionalized mesostructures. As expected, the chemistry of surfactant-silica systems is further complicated by the addition of a trialkoxysilane, and it appears that the formation of mixed silica- organosiloxane mesostructures is difficult at elevated temperatures under hydrothermal conditions in basic media. Room temperature reactions show a higher degree of incorporation of the organosiloxane, but the pore systems of the materials are not stable towards extraction. Therefore, in general, the assembly of organically modified mesostructures from acidic solutions appears preferable. It is possible that mixed silica-organosiloxane mesostructures, which are actually formed at room temperature under basic conditions upon hydrolysis of the precursor molecules, segregate at higher synthesis temperatures due to the hydrolysis-recondensation of siloxane bridges. The latter process is hindered in acidic solutions.
