Abstract
The thermal deformation of machine tools can be reduced by thermal compensation using the numerical control. In spite of much research work done, thermal compensation has not made its way to manufacturing practice yet. Reasons for that are the extensive measurements necessary for the parameterisation of the calculation models for the thermal deformation and the complex connection to the control. In this article, a compensation system based on available control functionalities and Finite-Element-Simulations for the parameterisation of the model is presented. With this compensation system, the thermal deformation of a machining centre can be reduced below 10 μm. This research work is done in cooperation with the companies MAG Powertrain and Siemens in an integrated European project.
