Abstract

We discuss an axiom expressing the Einstein causality condition for the carriers of the interaction between macroscopic preparing and measuring devices in the context of statistical theories. We show that in a quantum theory which satisfies this axiom, and, in addition has translation spectrum either in the forward lightcone (i.e. satisfies the standard spectral condition) or has purely tachyonic spectrum, there can be no local counters with vanishing vacuum rate. From this point of view we discuss the existence of causal position observables for elementary quantum systems.
