Abstract

This article analyses the results of an online survey (1,189 participants) about the Luxembourgish football language. With a focus on the choice of the variants within contact-induced lexical doublets (e. g., Schiidsrichter/Arbitter, in German Schiedsrichter/\n French arbitre >referee<), the investigation reveals the richness of lexical variants within the Luxembourgish football language as a mirror reflecting the multilingual variation in Luxembourgish overall. While the variants of certain lexical doublets show similar quantitative distributions, in most cases the participants have a clear preference for one of the possible variants. Additionally, the analysis reveals numerous doublets in the linguistic repertoire of the Luxembourgish football enthusiasts-meaning that they indicate using both variants equally on the individual level. Due to this diversity of lexical variants, Luxembourgish is quite a flexible and versatile player on the linguistic playing field.
