Abstract
Laser machining is an alternative to abrasive processes to prepare the shape of cutting tools, and especially suitable for super hard materials, e. g. for cBN (cubic boron nitride). In previous investigations it was shown that laser machining influences residual stress, phase composition and surface roughness of cBN cutting inserts due to the high thermal process load. This paper deals with the changes in surface integrity of cBN cutting tools caused by laser machining and their influence on tool life. Therefore, phase composition, surface roughness and residual stresses were determined after laser machining the rake faces of cBN inserts. Cutting experiments have been performed in hard turning. Wear behavior has been investigated and discussed.
