Abstract

Inductive surface hardening has been well established as an industrial process for several decades. It is used for a large Variety of mechanical components with close-contoured hardening of geared workpieces being one of the main applications. However, despite the technological progress in this field, it has not been possible to receive a hardening Pattern without asymmetries for helical gears so far. An effect occurs at the front face of such workpieces, which means that the hardness across one tooth flank is insufficient. In this article, a new process for close-contoured hardening of helical gears is introduced, which eliminates asymmetries of the hardening pattern and therefore the soft area. A newly designed hardening inductor as well as the process cycle are explained in detail. The results for a helical gear hardened With the new process are analysed and compared to a conventional hardening pattern.
