N1 - Funding information: Acknowledgments The research project ‘‘Auswahl und Optimie-rung von Prozessketten fuer den Bereich Blechumformung’’ (AiF 14442 N) is funded with budget resources of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour (BMWA) by the German Federation of Industrial Research Associations ‘‘Otto von Guericke’’ (AiF e. V.) and attended by the European Research Association for Sheet Metal Working (EFB e. V.). The design of the work piece, the selection of an appropriate material for a given geometry and the choice of the production technology are supported by FEM-Simulations and generally completed by specialized in-house departments. Besides the material selection, the geometry of the part and the production technology are chosen from a technical point of view: realizing the product and meeting the requirements for the product. The main challenge is to find the best way of producing the work piece most effectively and economically with the existing machines in the respective company. Therefore, the production processes have to be evaluated regarding different criteria. Those criteria in general are: ‘‘cost-saving’’, ‘‘delivery performance’’ or ‘‘in-time delivery’’. The criterion ‘‘quality of part’’ as a pre-condition is expected to be met as a matter of principle. Consequently, the aim of this project is to develop performance indicators to survey the effectiveness of sheet metal forming processes.
