Abstract
Commonly seals are used to prevent a system from leaking. Protective seals by contrast are basically used to protect a ball bearing against contamination. Those protective seals are often integrated in bearing units or used in clean bearings to keep the contamination outside the grease-lubricated bearing contact to avoid damage. To analyze the operating characteristics and mechanisms of protective seals in bearing units a research project was initiated by FVA (Research Association for Drive Systems). The results of this project allow to evaluate different designs of protective seals with respective to the criteria friction loss, thermal impact and protective performance and will be presented in this paper.
