Abstract

M41S-type mesostructured materials can be obtained in different topologies from silica gels containing amphiphilic surfactants as structure-directing agents. A part of the silica precursor tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) can be replaced by trialkoxysilanes R-Si(OR')3 such as phenyltrimethoxysilane (PTMOS). This should allow the direct modification of the pore walls during the synthesis process when hydrolyzed PTMOS molecules are able to take part in the condensation process of hydrolyzed TEOS. Series of synthesis experiments, conducted with variation of the concentrations of the silica precursor molecules TEOS and PTMOS as well as of the surfactant CnTMA+ (an alkyltrimethylammonium cation) establish a synthesis field diagram (SFD) which shows the educt concentration regions from which different product structures form. The effect of the PTMOS molecules on mesostructure formation can be determined by comparing this SFD with another one which was established under the same conditions without using a trialkoxysilane.
