Abstract

This paper presents the impact of temperature on electrical characteristics of a free-burning arc including voltage and power. By decreasing the arc current during the extinction, the arc temperature decreases as well. Beside, to change the arc temperature during arcing time two substances are applied near to the arc. High-speed camera images confirm a strong evaporation of the coating materials after high current arc ignition. An electrical arc model based on physical parameters is modified to determine the electrical characteristics of the arc in case of changing temperature. This model can be used as a black-box model to reproduce the electrical characteristic of the arc regarding temperature variation.
