Abstract

A considerable proportion of the costs in the construction of district heating pipelines is caused by the structural work below ground level: this includes the breaking up of the pavement, the reconstruction of the pavement, as well as the digging and backfilling of trenches. In particular, the closing of the trenches has to be done carefully, as defective compaction of the material used to backfill the trenches can cause damage due to subsequent settlement. This is of particular importance if the pipeline is located below a street. The usual requirements on materials used to backfill trenches can be found in the Additional technical conditions of contract and guidelines for excavation in streets and in the Additional technical conditions of contract and guidelines for earthworks published by the Forschungsgesellschaft fuer Strassen- und Verkehrswesen e. V., Koeln. Some of the most important requirements are introduced and explained in this paper. The subject matter is dealt with in accordance with the following questions, which arise in practical construction work: Which kinds of soil are suitable as a material for backfilling trenches? How is the backfill material to be compacted and what are the requirements made on compaction? How and to what extent must the success of compaction be controlled?
