Abstract

This study focuses on complications that may occur in the context of GI endoscopies. It is limited to the presentation of complications which are based on (medical-) engineering related causes. Firstly, a new 4-point classification was created as part of this study, which refers to the above mentioned complications related to (medical-) engineering. On the basis of this classification, some of the complications occurring in the context of the GI endoscopy were exemplarily selected and subsequently presented in a more detailed description. Distinction was made between complications due to technical malfunction, complications due to improper handling, complications inherent in the device and complications due to imperfect design features. This study aims to contribute to the prevention of possible complications due to the use of medical devices. The intended contribution mainly bases on a substantive discussion of causes and effects of equipment failures and technical shortcomings in the field of gastrointestinal endoscopy.
