Abstract
Landscape-ecological exemplary models intend to depict the spatial requirements of biocenoses, to help optimizing land use patterns, to guarantee in the long term the continued existence of natural resources, and to minimize the environmental effects of the actual and future land use. Based on theses goals the presented paper summarizes important approaches and concepts for the elaboration of landscape-ecological exemplary models. Thus it is made clear that only integrative approaches are a suitable basis for the formulation of ecological demands on the landscape development. In its second part this paper describes a highly knowledge-based and aggregating method for the derivation of exemplary models based on functions and household of landscapes. The enclosed exemplary maps illustrate the achieved results: the ecologically optimal state shaped by a pattern of areas being in different grades of land use intensity, of protected areas, and of areas with buffering functions. Such functionally based landscape-ecological exemplary models have various practical applications, e.g. they might be used as ecological reference mark for the evaluation of the sustainability of planning processes and landscape development.
