Abstract
Singly charged vanadium cluster ions from an external laser-vaporization source are accumulated in a Penning trap. They are subjected to electron bombardment which leads to further ionization. The charge states produced are analyzed by time-of-flight mass spectrometry after axial ejection from the trap. The results include the observation of charge states up to z = 6 and indications for signals at z = 7 and 8. Clusters of a given charge state may be selected for further investigation adding a new dimension to future studies of stored cluster ions.
