Abstract

This contribution deals with the fire design of external semi-rigid composite joints with concrete-filled hollow section steel columns. First, the design principles of two developed joints are explained. Four fire tests were carried out to investigate the fire performance of the new joints. To study local phenomenon in the joint, a three-dimensional numerical model was established in the Finite Element code Abaqus for one joint type. The data obtained from the fire tests was used to validate the model. It is shown that the model reasonably predicts the temperature development in the joint as well as the deflections. Thus, parametric studies were conducted to extend the parameter set of the fire tests. The aim was to optimize the composite joint for ambient and higher temperatures. For this reason, the dimensions of important steel parts for the load-bearing capacity were varied. Based on the results of the numerical studies, the paper concludes with recommendations for the design of the developed composite joints.
