N2 - This contribution to a statistical mechanics conference in July 1993 in Leuven gives a review of the work on finitely correlated states. The starting point is a quantum analogue of the frustration effects known from two-dimensional classical interactions, namely an obstruction to the existence of common extensions of states defined on different subsystems. From this point of view the finitely correlated pure states can be understood as the unfrustrated states, in which each term in a suitable finite range interaction is minimized separately.
