Abstract
In a possible approach towards breaking up the heterogeneous structures of retail nurseries in view of the product range, situational influence quantities are systematically identified (contingency approach). Proceding in an explorative way, and aside from the organisational form and the size of holdings, a qualitative content analysis reveals significant individual variables within the service spectrum that consists of the number of mere service departments/independent service companies, the service experience and the kind of service. Once these parameters have been identified, they allow an initial classification into either retail- or service-oriented types of holdings and they provide a starting point for further analyses at a quantitative level.
