Abstract
The commonly used p-y method stated in offshore guidelines is known to give erroneous results if applied to large diameter monopiles in sand. Such monopiles with diameters up to 6m and more are used for the foundation of offshore wind energy converters. The authors proposed a new p-y approach which gives reasonable results for piles of all diameters in sand under static loading conditions. In a comprehensive parametric study, the results of the new approach are compared to the results of numerical simulations which are based on a stress- and strain-dependent constitutive model for sand. It is found that the new approach predicts the load bearing behavior as well as the local pile-soil interaction much more realistically than the current approach of the offshore guidelines.
