Abstract
Essayism is a mode or methodology of writing that crosses the boundaries between modern discourses and genres, thematizing the construction of the text itself, particularly with regard to narration, fictionality, medium and discourse. The term, metatext‘is suggested as a descriptive category, as it comments the connection between texts and their own inherent commentary structure, for the oscillation between narration and reflection, fiction and reality is constitutive of the essay as a self-reflection of modernity. As an example of the essay as fictional text, Robert Musil’s essay Über Robert Musils Bücher (1913) will be analyzed in connection with figurative and referential double-structures.
