Abstract

This paper presents the principles of liquid surfactant membranes and their application to the development of a simple and effective enzyme immobilization, and gives different examples of the encapsulation of enzymes in emulsions. Several characteristics of liquid membranes and enzyme emulsions, including transport effects, membrane stability and process modeling, are discussed. Enzyme emulsions combine specific enzymatic reactions with selective transport through the organic phase. This selective transport is achieved by additives, such as liquid ion exchangers or reactive extraction compounds. Thus, the transport is based on the chemical behavior of the permeants and not on their molecular weight.
