Abstract

The stiffness of a machine tool constitutes a prime criterion for high productivity in combination with high accuracy. Precise workpiece surfaces are to be achieved with few work procedures. As a contribution to master the conflictive aims of high machining velocity and increased precision at the same time, the Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools (IFW) at the Leibniz University of Hannover develops an adaptronic spindle system for milling machines. In this paper it is shown how the adaptronic spindle system can counteract static and dynamic compliance of the cutting tool caused by process forces through counter movements. The ability of using automatic online-compensation and its experimental results are presented. In milling tests the static tool deflection can be reduced by up to 80 % and the control with harmonics can improve the dynamic compliance clearly.
