Abstract

These days profiles and other elastomer components used in vehicle interiors are subject to stringent requirements with respect to odor and gaseous emissions, while at the same time expected to maintain a high level as regards mechanical data and guarantee for lifetime. The crosslinking efficiency and emissions behavior of mono-, bi-and multifunctional peroxides were studied in comparison to a traditional sulfur crosslinking system in EPDM. The high crosslinking efficiency of the type of peroxide used partially offsets a high concentration of volatile cleavage products per mol peroxide in the vulcanizate. So the use of an efficient peroxide helps to reduce the total amount of volatiles of an elastomer product significantly.
